life is not as easy as it seemed to be

Everybody has their own philosophy in life. i am no different. some ppl turn to religion.... well, i used to do that too until i realize that it doesn't matter wad/who u pray to. In the end, it is the person himself who decides how to treat the world and himself. religion provides a set of examples and rules to follow. sadly, most dun.

Anyway, I have always been fascinated by wise words and quotes, no matter where they come from; be it the bible, games, movies, smt i have read or perhaps just smt i created myself. Now for the past 21 years of my life, i have trying my best to live by this quote.

"do unto others what you wish to be done unto you"

Its smt i heard long ago so i dunno where did it come from *though i am sure one can easily Google it* Basically, what it means it that, However you wan to treat someone, always put urself in their shoes first. This has been the core principle in which i have live my life trying to adhere to when it comes to dealing with ppl, although not always successfully. Anyone who claims that i do not do so, is insulting me, because I do it all the time; even though there are occasionally times that i forget, in which i always do my best to make up for it.

of cos this is just a very fundamental explanation. And there are a few exceptions that i have allowed myself to make, which many ppl may not agree with me, such as "an eye for an eye". However, recently i have decided that it is not worth the time and energy.

Anyway, just as i have decided to stop holding grudges against ppl *actually i still hold grudges, but i am more willing to let it go* i have realized that i cannot live by the above mentioned quote anymore. I have realized that people do not care how YOU wan to be treated. They only care about how THEY wan to be treated. Just 2 semesters back, the econs teacher pointed out this problem. he said " the golden rule does not apply in the world of customer service. Instead, the rule should be changed to "do unto others what THEY wish done unto them!""

However, i feel that this not only applies to the world of business but to the world around us as well. If it were a perfect world, and everyone follows the same rule, then perhaps the golden rule will work. However, this is not the case as i see it. Most of the arguments and misunderstandings against me comes from my stoic  following of this rule. take the most recent case for example. I, being a friendly guy just says hello to a friend. BUT apparently, the friend, whom for whatever reason dosen't like to be said hello to, thus leading to an argument, or misunderstanding, whatever u wan to call it.

ok so assuming u argue that i did not know the friend does not like to be greeted. ok fine, and assuming now the friend tells me that he*i'm a sexist, i always use "he"* does not like being greeted or say talked to. so what do i do the next time i see him?

1) greet him? well that would probably lead to some kind of conflict again.

2) ignore him? well then it would be wierd right? and what kind of friendship would that be?

now this situation may seem ridiculous. so lets put in a more practical example.

ur good ol pal is knocking his head with a hammer. Now i am pretty sure most ppl would prob go "hey wtf are u doing brrooo? stop doing that its not cool!" or smt like that. Now then the guy starts arguing with u about y he likes hitting himself on the head with the hammer *stupid argument but i'm just trying to paint a scenario that you are so darn sure that if u were doing it, u would want someone to stop u*. He continues to tell u that he has been doing it for years, and nothing has happened to him to him so far, other than the occasional bleeding and waking up with a terrible headache. He claims that the pros outweigh the cons. the pros being well .... able to sleep better? and getting better results in school. i'm just saying.

so what are you going to do the next time u see him pulverizing his head?

1) continue asking him to stop.... and risk ruining ur frenship?

2) tell him he is doing a good job and to keep it up..... against ur own principles? *i am assuming that ur principles stop u from hitting urself on the head with a hammer*

Of cos there are other options but i'm trying to prove a point here. U see the dilemma? Oh i forgot to add that he mentions that all his friends are doing it too and in fact, doing it better!
U realize that PERHAPS to that fren, he may know that it is wrong, but circumstances are forcing him to do so. but to u, or me or whatever, the scenario just seems so obviously wrong.

SO wad is the best choice for this kind of scenario?
