*This is an old post*
i remember y i quit guitar ensemble in jc. the teachers and seniors there kept pestering me to keep practicing and memorizing stupid songs *chinese new year song wtf??*. I had no music background while most ppl who joined had at least some. well, i had memorized how to play the moonlight sonata during my spare time but that was it. besides it was just pure memory work. during the guitar sessions i felt pressured and demoralized. It was then that i told myself that i would never be able to learn how to play the guitar. It was then i quit. I then tried out CO playing the er hu for a while. after a while i gave that up too. Spending 2hrs + in a small room just practicing simple tunes that sounded like crap was not my cup of tea. I then convinced myself that i had no skill in music at all.
During the second year of my ns life, my frens suddenly started learning how to play the guitar. yea it was cool and i wanted to learn too. however i had already convinced myself that i had no skill in it, so i didnt try. well, other than randomly plucking strings to create dissonance noise and then calling it haunting music. after losing money from being scammed or by irresponsible ignorance, i grew weary of the tuition business so i decided to call it quits. I had nothing to do so i decided to spend my free time in camp learning how to play my first song on guitar "wonderwall"
the song sounded pretty good on guitar, and i was inspired to carry on. i took my old rusting classical guitar out of storage and practiced. whenever i was free i just took up the guitar and played it, be it in camp or at home. I was basically memorizing and it wasnt that easy, but there is smt about hearing urself playing pleasing music that makes u wan to continue. And so i played. from "wonderwall" to "i'm yours" to many other simple yet popular songs. Nobody wanted to sing with my guitar playing so i learned how to strum and sing at the same time. Slowly but surely, i improved and became wad i am today. Not good but not a biginner either. Basically a novice.
SO wad am i trying to mean here? basically today's events have lead me to recall how i picked up the guitar and so typed it out so that i can think clearer.
I had this idea of forming a band since the end of last semester. So i had made plans for ppl to try "jamming" in my house today after school. However they suddenly kept saying oh not free la next week then go, stuff like that. i was kinda irritated but i supposed it was my fault for not confirming again beforehand. anyway in the end they came my house. but the session was kinda a flop. some did not practice, others did not show interest. i was disappointed and annoyed at the same time.
However, it then came to my mind that these ppl do not share the same passion of forming a band as me. passion is impt. Passion was wad enabled me to start the tuition business. it was wad led me to continue playing my guitar although i sucked at it. it is passion that drives us to be great at things we thought is impossible. pressure by other ppl only serves to extinguish the fire, as my time in guitar ensemble had done. as much as i would like to share my excitement of creating a band to others, it is their own passion to contribute to the band that will be self sustaining and more effective.
So i have decided not to keep reminding ppl to practice or tell them to go someone's house to play together as a band. I do not want to be the one who kill off any existing passion for playing. I will merely suggest. if that suggestion makes ur senses tingle with excitement, then that will be great. if not, i will stay silent and wait, and look forward to the day u guys want to help me with my "band".
Hmmm I guess having a band requires everyone to have the same schedule and passion. I've always wanted to start a band too, but I think it really needs time and committment!
ReplyDeleteyea but i'm not giving up though =P just gotta have more patience to convince ppl =)
ReplyDeletei totally feel for you man. same school, same guitar yjc ensemble. i would say that now i am in a state of merely letting my guitar's strings literally rot in the one corner. havent touched it for a year man. cos i felt that in jc i was merely memorising the fingering by hand and not enjoying the true experience of learning guitar. we played those boring old cassical jazz tunes that dont really appeal to me. the chords really scare me. and, IVE ALWAYS WANTED TO BE IN A BAND TOO! sad thing is, i can only sing, thats it. if u lack a singer i can always pop by. im very very passionate about that.
ReplyDeleteLOL really? tot it was only me >.< i think we DO need a female singer haha but i prob need some time to sort things out. all right! hope i can piece something together haha
